A LITTLE ABOUT ME...
Hey there! I’m Matt Baker, New York City-based jazz pianist and creator of The Ultimate Live Singer. I’m so glad you’ve made it to my page!
Throughout my 30+ year career, I’ve had the privilege of playing with world-class instrumentalists and vocalists across the globe–and in addition to pursuing and earning honors in my own craft (I’m a Montreux International Solo Jazz Piano Competition award winner and was even named “The Australian Piano Whiz” by The New York Times), I’ve also accompanied thousands of singers.
While many have been big stars like Pattie LaBelle, Jennifer Holliday, Judy Collins, and the “who’s who” of the jazz world, I equally enjoy working with newcomers on the scene. That’s where The Ultimate Live Singer comes in.
WHY I CREATED THIS PROGRAM...
Nothing excites me more than watching an up-and-coming vocalist jump onstage and knock it out of the park. But more often than not, I witness something else: Their inexperience, specifically on the bandstand, getting in the way of both their musical success and the fun they should be having. The root of the problem? Communication.
You might have the most beautiful voice anyone has ever heard, but unless you know how to communicate with your accompanists or musicians (like directing your intros and endings or counting off the songs correctly), it almost makes no difference.
Because of this, I wanted to provide the more ‘unseasoned’ singers with all the tools they need to lead a band and, in turn, gain the confidence that allows them to command the stage and put on a great show. Teaching alongside me are three dear friends who also happen to be three of the world’s top live performing vocalists: Grammy award winning Nicole Zuraitis, jazz vocalist/trumpet player Benny Benack III, and award-winning jazz/rock vocalist Veronica Swift.
